People with Dementia and Communication

We at NIKISA Dementia Village have been taking care of people with dementia for almost 4 years and it is with our experience we have found that communication plays an important role in engaging people with dementia.

A major cause for the increase in burden of a caregiver is the breakdown of the communication between the caregiver and the person with dementia. As we have been engaging with caregivers who have come to us for help, what we have found is the lack of knowledge and also the capability of the caregiver to have any kind of communication with the person with dementia.

Our experience in dealing with people with dementia in regards to communication has helped us a lot in keeping them happy with us. What we have noticed is speaking clearly, slowly and using short sentences helps in better communication and also makes the person with dementia very agreeable to us. Though speaking slowly is an advantage what we have at times noticed is it would be a burden for the working memory, as the person with dementia must retain the whole sentence for a longer time. So we would recommend speaking slowly only if the person is having trouble following you.

Speaking loudly should always be avoided as it could embarrass the person with dementia and with that they could get more impatient. With embarrassment the person with dementia could over time loose his identity too.

With our experience and research that we have done at our facility NIKISA Dementia Village and Alzheimer’s Hospital we are very well equipped in providing a safe, happy and healthy environment at our facility. For any queries and information regarding admissions at our facility please call us at 99450 90448 and we would more than happy to help you.
